About us

Tauranga Moana Biosecurity Capital (TMBC) is an Incorporated Society with a mission to shift New Zealanders perception of biosecurity, how it connects to our everyday lives, and how we can all get involved.

Our focus is on working in partnership with mana whenua, connecting our communities to the importance of biosecurity, and building collaboration across iwi, hapū, community organisations, industry, business, science and mātauranga Māori experts, central government and local government to achieve biosecurity excellence.

What is biosecurity?

Biosecurity is about protecting our region from harmful pests and diseases, stopping them from entering, spreading, and causing damage.

Biosecurity protects our environment, our food production, and the places we love. It also protects our livelihoods. Aotearoa's economy depends on healthy land and sea, underpinning industries like horticulture, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, tourism, and our ports.

A single biosecurity breach can have serious consequences, damaging ecosystems, threatening native species, and disrupting businesses and communities. We've seen it firsthand, with Psa devastating orchardists and families across the Bay of Plenty. New threats continue to emerge, from pests like the brown marmorated stink bug to ongoing risks facing pōhutukawa, mānuka, and kauri.

As kaitiaki, we all have a responsibility to protect our unique environment for future generations. At TMBC, we're local at heart with a national impact. What happens here affects the rest of Aotearoa.

Protecting our way of life is a shared responsibility. Everyone has a part to play.
