When Predator Free Bay of Plenty gets their new trappers set up, they often get asked what they should do with any dead rats? But what they don’t often get asked is how it should be handled.
Dead pests do carry a risk of disease and infection, particularly with pests such as hedgehogs. Ideally, dead pests should be handled as little as possible.
Predator Free Bay of Plenty recommends always using gloves, and trying to use the trap to release pests without touching them. You can also try using a tool – such as a fish hook gripper.
For some people, this is an icky task – but remembering the end goal of protecting our native birds will hopefully help you through!
